Large Pour Anticipation…

May 28 2024

Hello, Art Lovers!

Today has been a wonderfully productive day in my studio, and I’m excited to share what I’ve been up to. Preparing canvases is an essential part of my artistic process, and it’s something I truly enjoy. There’s something so satisfying about getting everything ready for a new batch of fluid art pieces.

Prepping the Canvases

This morning, I spent time meticulously prepping my canvases. Here’s a little peek into my process:

  1. Selecting the Canvases: I always choose high-quality canvases to ensure a sturdy base for my artwork. Today, however I gessoed over a piece of canvas art my friend Barb no longer wanted…waste not want not! Why waste good materials? I prepared a variety of sizes, but I’m particularly excited about the large one I’ll be working on later.

  2. Priming: Each canvas is primed with layers of gesso. This step is crucial as it helps the paint adhere better and creates a smooth surface for the pour. I usually let the gesso dry for a few hours before moving on to the next step.

  3. Taping the Edges: To keep the edges clean and sharp, I tape them off. This also helps in creating a neat finish once the painting is complete.

  4. Setting Up the Workspace: I make sure my workspace is organized and ready. I cover my work table with plastic to catch any drips and splatters, and I arrange all my tools and paints within easy reach.

Anticipating the Large Pour

This week, I’m planning to dive into a large pour piece. Large canvases are always a bit of a challenge, but I feel I’ve gotten proficient enough to do one

  • Technique: For this piece, I’ll be using a combination of a pour, movement and blow dryer techniques. I love the dynamic effects these methods create, and I’m eager to see how the colors blend and interact on a larger scale.

  • Mindset: Creating art is as much about the mental state as it is about the technique. I’m approaching this piece with a sense of calm and openness, ready to embrace whatever the paint decides to do.

Stay Tuned!

I’ll be sure to document the process and share updates with you all. Creating large pour pieces is always an adventure, and I can’t wait to see how this one turns out. Thank you for joining me on this artistic journey. Your support and interest mean the world to me.

Until next time, keep embracing your creativity!

Warmly,

Valerie
